Last fall our congregation decide to enroll in the Stephen Series system of lay caring ministry for 2014. The Stephen Series system was developed by Stephen Ministries, a non-profit religious and educational organization based in St. Louis, Missouri and founded by Kenneth Haugk a Lutheran pastor . We will be developing a lasting program of caring ministry through the Stephen Series system of training and organization. This model of ministry is already working in thousands of congregation throughout North America and is equipping lay-people to minister to others in need. Immanuel Lutheran church will be preparing for this ministry in the months to come. From Feb.2 through Feb. 8, 2014 I, Katherine Canfield had the opportunity to attend a one-week Stephen Series Leaders Training course in Anaheim, California. At this training course, I received the instruction and materials necessary to implement and sustain this program of lay caring ministry here at Immanuel. Over the next several months, Julie Lorenz who received training previously and I will be laying the foundation to implement the Stephen Ministry here at Immanuel Lutheran Church. A Group of laypeople of our congregation will undertake 50 hours of training in Christian caring skills under our guidance. This training will prepare the participants to care for others, covering such areas as how to listen effectively, how to maintain confidentiality, how to deal with people experiencing crises, and many other areas of concern. A Christ-centred approach to caring and the need to care for the whole person will stressed throughout the training. Upon completion of Stephen Series training, these lay caregivers will be commissioned as “Stephen Ministers” and will become an important part of caring ministry here at Immanuel. These Stephen Ministers will provide confidential, one to one Christian care for people experiencing challenges in their lives such as hospitalization, loss of a loved one, loneliness, divorce, unemployment, birth of a child, and many other life events for which a person could benefit from an effective helping and caring ministry. This will be an exciting time for our congregation her at Immanuel. The Stephen Series both multiplies the amount of caring ministry that goes on in our congregation and deepens the level of participation by laypeople in the healing ministry of Jesus Christ. If you have questions about this new form of ministry our congregation is undertaking, please feel free to ask us, Julie Lorenz or Katherine Canfield. In the meantime, I would like you to keep us and our congregation in your thoughts and prayers as we prepare for this major step forward in our lay caring ministry. A servant with you in Christ, Katherine Canfield
The Lord’s Prayer: Sixth Petition “And lead us not into temptation.” Jesus faced the temptation of Satan for us and resisted it with the Holy Word of God. God’s Word strengthens and enables us to resist Satan and grants us forgiveness when we fail. Our Sunday School enrolment policy states that if your child turns 3 years old they are able to begin attending Sunday School. So, even if your child has recently had her/his third birthday, your child is welcome to begin attending Sunday School, if you feel that they are ready to do so. Please talk to Kathy Withage; or to a Pre-School teacher about registering your child in Sunday School. The church provides offering envelopes for all Sunday School children. We believe that this will promote good stewardship habits among our children—habits which hopefully will be with them for their lifetime. The envelopes are numbered and individual offerings are recorded and added to their parent’s financial contribution statement. The Sunday School offerings go into the church’s general budget. The exception to this may be to collect special offerings for missions. Information about a special offering will be communicated to parents prior to a special offering being taken. If you would like to know more about Sunday School, have questions about what is happening in the Sunday School, or would like to help with Sunday School please talk to Kathy Withage.

Prayer continues to be an important part of our ministry here at Immanuel. We always include prayers for special needs in our Sunday morning worship, but there is also need to pray fervently for people in need at other times during the week. The prayer chain consists of caring members of our congregation who are committed to the ministry of prayer. Special prayer requests can be made to the co-ordinator, Sigrid Heinrich at 328-8067. She then passes them on to others on the prayer chain. Please know that your requests are kept in confidence. Remember also to call the prayer chain with prayers of thanksgiving when prayers are answered.
WEEKDAY SERVICES DURING LENT
The Season of Lent is once again upon us. Lent is a season where we reflect upon the fact that our sin cost Jesus his life, and cost God his only Son. Our heavy hearts of repentance prepare us for the joy to be expressed at Easter when Jesus is Risen, and when God’s Son is returned to Him in glory!
Because of the preparatory nature of Lent, it is customary to devote special time to reflection and prayer. To this end, we will be hosting midweek Lenten services throughout Lent here at Immanuel. You are invited also to a soup and bun supper preceding worship. The details are listed below. A big THANK YOU to our Parish Fellowship Ladies for arranging supper! There is no cost for supper, only a freewill offering if you would like to contribute.

Little Bit of Humor
A mother was frying eggs for breakfast when her teenage son burst into the kitchen. “Careful!” he exclaimed, then continued an excited, rapid commentary: “Put in more butter! Oh my goodness! You’re cooking too many at once. Turn them! Turn them now! We need more butter... they’re going to stick! Careful!...You never listen to me when you’re cooking! Turn them! Hurry up! Don’t forget to salt them. You know you always forget to salt them. Use the salt. Use the salt now!” His mother stared at him. “What’s wrong with you? You think I don’t know how to fry a couple of eggs?” The son calmly replied, “I just wanted to show you what it feels like when I’m playing soccer.”Immanuel Lutheran Church 20 Rocky Mountain Blvd. West Lethbridge, Alberta 403-327-4336
